Media, books, sources; they all play a big role in what we believe in. That’s why consumption should be done intentionally; it’s important to protect what knowledge we consume.

When selecting what resources I’m going to consume I look for a topic I want to become more knowledgeable in. I’m dedicated to being a student of life so when I consume media I look for what insight I can take from it. And there is a lesson that can be learned from every story, nonfiction and fiction.

But learning never stops at consuming. When we just consume we can easily fall into the traps of overconsumption. Which never benefits us if we’re not retaining the knowledge we are taking in. So I like to consume less and process, apply, and retain more.

What that can look like when played out is:

ConsumingProcessingApplicationRetention
Receiving information on a specific topicUnderstanding the informationApplying the knowledge learnedEnsuring that the information will be remembered
Reading a bookAnnotating, common-placing, reflectingCompleting a project based on the information consumedTaking what you learned throughout the learning process and teaching it to someone
